A Guide for Understanding the Best Shingle Options for Your Home in North Texas

We’ve said it once and we’ll say it again, North Texas is not the most forgiving place to live when it comes to storms that produce heavy wind, rain, and hail. This was made evident by our most recent storm on March 24, 2019 that left many homes damaged and in need of a new roof.

If you have recently found yourself a victim to a storm and your home in need of a new roof, selecting the right shingle option is extremely important.  Here, we’ll help you out a bit by going through the most common shingle options for your home in North Texas so you can make a decision that gives you peace of mind!

3- TAB COMPOSITE SHINGLES

When considering up-front affordability, 3-tab composite shingles are the roofing option that is easiest on the pocketbook. Typical 3-tab shingles are made of an asphalt composite material and work to protect the home by helping to roll water off of the roof.

Along with affordability, other benefits of 3-tab shingles include the fact that they are available in a variety of different durability options and come in multiple colors and styles. However, because they are thin and offer no dimension, 3-tab shingles have a shorter lifespan than other composite shingle options.

ARCHITECTURAL COMPOSITE SHINGLES

The most common style of composite shingle installed on homes in Frisco, Texas is architectural. Homeowners love architectural shingles because they are available in a variety of different colors and look amazing on ANY home.

For a roof that is going to stand the test of time and hold up to the severe weather conditions present in Frisco, Texas architectural shingles also offer extreme strength and the ability to withstand storms. Like 3-tab shingles, architectural shingles are made of an asphalt composite material. However, they are thicker than a typical 3-tab shingle and designed to withstand high winds. Therefore, less water is able to get underneath and cause long-term damage such as mold infestation, leaks, or shingle tears. These features increase the lifespan of the shingle greatly and are why most architectural shingles have a minimum lifespan of 30-years.

WOOD SHAKE OR CLAY TILES

Wood shake or clay tiles are often considered the most premium style roof you can install on your home.  However, if you live in North Texas you should know that wood shake and clay tiles are not a practical or realistic option for your home.
